Describe an object or symbol in Macbeth and explain how it helped you to understand a character.

Macbeth is a play based in Scotland around 700 years ago that focuses on the downfall of the character Macbeth, as a result of his following his dire ambition to become King. William Shakespeare uses symbolism in the play to help explain his ideas of guilt and insanity. He uses the symbols like an invisible dagger and the presence of blood to show how his greed for his ambition doesn’t let anyone get in his way.

Speech

Ambition. What is it well pretty sure that’s what I’m talking about? Ambition it’s something we all have inside us. its that feeling that we have to conquer our dreams. We all have it, everyone’s is different. your ambition could be to beat a sports record, could be a job that you have been wanting to get for your whole life. But ambition isn’t always good; your ambition can ruin your life in an instant, like what happened with Macbeth and Anakin Skywalker. To help me explain this I’m using four texts: Macbeth, StarWars revenge of the sith, Gattaca and Ozymandias.

Macbeth shows his ambition by chasing the witches prophecy and hoping to become the King. Initially Lady Macbeth was the more ambitious one out of them both and she was the driving force to push Macbeth to kill King Duncan so Macbeth could become King. Lady Macbeth said, “Yet I do fear thy nature / It is too full of the milk of human kindness”. Lady Macbeth says this because she thinks Macbeth is not mentally strong enough of being capable of killing King Duncan. It takes this pure ambition from Lady Macbeth to crack through Macbeth’s shell of kindness and defy the man that he once protected. Macbeth’s ambition never came from himself, it only came from other people telling him either what was going to happen of what he should do. If he had never met the 3 witches on top of that hill, he would have never found this deadly ambition that sent him insane until his death.

In the movie Star Wars Revenge of the Sith, Anakin Skywalker is having dreams of his wife dying in childbirth. These were the same type of dreams that he had before his mother died. Anakin goes to seek guidance from Master Yoda. “The fear of loss is the path to the Dark Side”. Yoda says this, warning Anakin that if he listens to his ambitions of saving his wife, he will fall into the hands of the dark side. Anakin also goes to see Palpatine and this is where he plants the seed of the dark side in Anakin’s head. “Darth Plagueis had such knowledge of the Dark side he could even keep the ones he cared about from dying” . Anakin responds with, ‘Is it possible to learn this power?’ and Palpatine says, ” Not from a Jedi” Palpatine says this to win over Anakin’s mind and ambition to mislead him towards the Dark Side of the force. This is showing that to get to your ambition, it is inside of you and not in an external force like the one that Palpatine is giving him. in the end , Anakin turns to the Dark Side and lets his ambition cloud his mindso he is not capable of seeing that in fact he is the one who is killing his wife.

Gattaca is a movie on the ambition of Vincent, a naturally born child. He was born into a world where humans were capable of genetically engineering their kids to have the perfect person. He has his life long ambition of going to space, but because he is a naturally born child he is deemed to be weak and unusable because he is not as amazing as everybody else. Vincent finds a mam called Jerome who was born by genetic engineering to be the best swimmer. Jerome has no ambition because he was born perfect and was told what he was good at from a young age, but when he did not come first in his swimming race, but second, he lost his point to live and stood in front of a car, consequently turning him into a paraplegic, making him incapable of walking. Vincent uses Jerome’s blood, urine, skin, hair and all other bodily substances to be capable of faking his way into the Gattaca facility so he can accomplish his life long ambition of going to space. Towards the end of the movie, Vincent finds his brother and challenges him to a swimming contest. During the swim, his brother stops him and asks how he is beating him. Vincent replies with “This is how I did it, Anton: I never saved anything for the swim back.”Vincent says this, meaning that getting to his ambition he would never look back because if he did he would be able to push himself to a point that he shouldn’t be capable of. This is showing Vincent’s ambition perfectly because he would never step down or walk back until he could finally succeed his ambition .

Ozymandias is an ancient king from an ancient land where he ruled over his kingdom. This poem was the perfect example of what happens when your ambition runs out and you die. We meet a traveller walking through a desert and he finds an old statue of Ozymandias. It inscribed “My name is Ozymandias, king of kings” meaning he was once a great man with supreme power over his land. But the meaning of this poem is not that he is a great man, it is that once you die and your legacy is forgotten your ambition to succeed and get power will mean nothing, and your legacy will fall into the sand and turn to nothingness, like Ozymandius’.

In conclusion, ambition can be a great thing but it can also be deadly. As seen in Macbeth and Star Wars, if you let someone choose your ambition it can turn deadly. But it can be good if you let it naturally flow, like with Vincent in Gattica and how he did almost anything to be able to complete, and be capable of getting to his ambition so he could prove to everybody that just because he isn’t perfect it doesn’t mean that he doesn’t need to be the same. In the end, like Ozymandias, there is nothing you can do when you die , because as hard as you try there will always be the last person to ever think about you.

Ozymandias

we are used to reading/watching things about ambition like in Macbeth and Gattaca. these two excerpts are showing the effected of ambition on the way to getting what they won’t. Ozymandias is showing what happens after you have reached your goals in life. we find a broken statue in the middle of the desert covered in the sand showing that as much as you try one day you will be forgotten and your legacy will cease to exist.

Gattaca paragraph

in the movie Gattaca directed by Andrew Niccol, he shows the idea of ambition in the character vincent. he does this by vincent doing anything he can to get to his lifelong dream of going to space. even if it is being a janitor just so he can get into the Gattaca building. vincent says at the start of the movie when he is cleaning the glass “yea but if the glass clean it will be easier for you to see my on the other side”. this showing that he will do anything to get his lifelong dream.

NCEA 1.5 Formal writing: ambition in Macbeth

Explore Shakespeare’s use of language effects and dramatic devices and how they reveal the Action of ambition on the character Macbeth or Lady Macbeth

William Shakespeare’s play Macbeth is set around 400 years ago in Jacobeon England. Shakespeare uses an abundance of language features in his play , for example, metaphors, dramatic irony and symbolism . Shakespeare uses these effects to help explain the main message of dire ambition.

When we first meet Macbeth he is a noble man that is a brave soldier. Macbeth meets the three witches and it changes the whole course of his life by telling him that he will become King one day. In Act 1, Scene 3 the witches mention to Macbeth “All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter!”. This is the witches forseeing the future.

William Shakespeare uses dramatic irony in his play Macbeth to show what the main characters are thinking, without the rest of the people in the scene knowing what they are thinking about. In Act 1, Scene 4 King Duncan announces his heir to be his son Prince Malcolm. After hearing this Macbeth says to himself “Stars, hide your fires let not light see my black and deep desires” This is Macbeth telling us that he is going to have to do something about Malcolm because if he is to become King, Malcolm is in his way. Macbeth is saying this to show what he is thinking he is about to do. He does not want anyone to see or find out because it is punishable by death. This is showing the start of Macbeth’s dire ambition to become King and he will do whatever it takes, even if it is killing King Duncan or Malcolm.

When Macbeth kills Duncan he walks back and meets up with Lady Macbeth and looks down at his hands and says “This is a sorry sight ” expressing that he is realising he has done something wrong. This is showing the start of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth’s slow fall down the rabbit hole of demise. Macbeth says “Sleep no more”  “the innocent sleep”. Shakespeare has used this to show the guilt that Macbeth already feels over killing Duncan and that he can not sleep anymore. Macbeth is saying this because he is now not an innocent man and he is going to have to live with Duncan’s blood on his hands for the rest of his life.

In Macbeth, Shakespeare uses blood as recurring symbolism. Shakespeare uses blood as a symbol of guilt of how Macbeth and LadyMacbeth feel over killing King Duncan and all the innocent people they kill or order to get killed to feed their lust for power. In Act 5 Scene 1 Lady Macbeth says “Here’s the smell of the blood still all the perfumes of Arabia will not sweeten this little hand. Oh, oh, oh!” She is saying this because not all the “perfumes of Arabia” can cover up the smell of blood on her hands. This means nothing in the world is going to be able to hide the guilt that she feels of killing King Duncan. Lady Macbeth also says “Out damned spot! Out, I say!” She is saying this because she is trying to get rid of the guilt she feels. This is where their ambition and greed for power start to backfire on them and their lives start to fall apart and end in the demise of both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth.

Metaphors are a key aspect of Shakespeare’s plays, especially in his play Macbeth. When Lady Macbeth kills herself Macbeth says”Out, out, brief candle” .This is Macbeth comparing life to a candle. If you blow on it too hard it can go out like a candle. Macbeth is saying this because it takes something as simple as guilt for his beloved wife to go insane and kill herself. Metaphors are useful in plays like Macbeth to help explain the meaning of the concept that they are talking about. Shakespeare uses these to help the readers/audience to understand the in-depth concept that Shakespeare is using.

Shakespeare has used his play Macbeth to explain the concept of ambition. He has helped us understand this by using metaphors, dramatic irony and symbolism. These concepts help us understand the in-depth concept of ambition. He shows us how someones lust for power is capable of overcoming them and ending up being the reason why they die.
